Bookmark Contest Winner

A HUGE congratulations goes out to Fatima Iqbal from 8 Naipaul! Fatima is our 2009/2010 Bookmark Contest Winner.
Thanks to all those students who entered a bookmark into our contest. Look for a display of the bookmarks in the library in over the next couple of weeks!

Movie Night

Last year, a huge phenomenon hit the the movie theatres - that's right "Twilight." We will be showing the movie "Twilight" in the library on Wednesday, November 11th from 3:15 to 5:30. Sign up in the binder located on the table just outside of the library. Space is limited!

The movie "Twilight" is based on Stephanie Meyer's book "Twilight" which first hit the bookstores in 2005. Meyer's life would never be the same. Since then, we have read the 4 book saga of Edward and Bella. Can you believe that this book was initially rejected by 14 book agents?! Today it is one of the biggest selling books - over 17 million copies worldwide!

"Twilight" centres around Bella Swan, a teenager who moves to Washington to live with her father. There, she meets Edward Cullen, a good-looking and strange guy in her school. Bella falls in love with him, but also discovers the dark and dangerous secret Edward and his family hold close - they are vampires.

Do You Like to Scary Stories?

It was a dark and stormy night and the wind howled through the dark and empty rooms of the house...

Do you like to share scary stories with your friends? Scary stories are great at any time of the year, not just around Halloween. Telling a scary story is a skill that requires the teller to captivate his/her audience. Here is a short video that gives you a few tips on how to tell a scary story.

Scary Stories in the Library

Do you like stories that make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, your spine tingle and make you gasp in horror? If you do, then join us for Scary Stories in the Library on Wednesday, October 28th! Valley Park students and teachers will be sharing some of their favourite ghost and horror stories that are sure to make you jump and scream. This event will start at 3:20 until 4:30! We will be stopping throughtout for those students who are unable to stay for the whole event. Join us if you dare!

Movie Night in the Library

We are having our first movie night in the Library on Wednesday, October 7th from 3:30 to 5:30. We will be showing the movie "Coraline," based on the book by author Neil Gaiman. Check out the trailer below:




Coraline was written by British author Neil Gaiman in 2002. It is considered to be a fantasy/horror novel. The story begins with Coraline and her parents moving into an old house. As she explores her new home, she discovers a locked door. She takes the key and opens the door only to find herself entering another world that is almost identical to her own. However, in this world there are dark and mysterious characters and strange things happening.



Join us for a reading from the book and the movie. Be sure to sign up in the binder on the "Pop in a Book" table. Space is limited!

Last Movie Night of the Year!


That's right - we will be having our last movie night on Tuesday, June 16th in the library from 3:30 to 5:30. Our movie will be "The City of Ember," based on a book by Jeanne DuPrau.



This story revolves around the city of Ember, a human settlement that lives in the pitch black, but is also know as the only city with light in a dark world. However, their electrical supply is slowly dying. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow decode instructions that will lead them to safety in the outside world and perhaps save their city.

IT'S BOOK FAIR WEEK

Our Spring Scholastic Book Fair has finally arrived! Get into summer early with our Beach theme and awesome summer reads. Check out the book fair between 8 am and 4 pm everyday. We have books by Neil Gaiman, Stephanie Meyers, Gordon Korman and Eric Walters. Fill your beach bag with great books and read the summer away.

Who Are These Readers

Check it out! Your teachers as babies and children. Outside the library is a poster with teacher's pictures on it from when they were young - really young. Can you guess who they are? Fill out your ballot and put it in the box. Get the most right answers and you could win a prize. Be sure to write your name and class on your ballot sheet.



Door Decorating Contest

Get into the Beach Spirit by decorating your classroom door in the Beach Theme. Surf boards, sand castles, flip flops, beach towels - these are just some of the things that you can put on your door. Judging will take place on Friday, May 15th. The class that wins will win a prize. Surfs Up!

April Movie Night



That's right, we will be having another Movie Night on Tuesday, April 21st in the Library starting at 3:20 sharp. This month we will be featuring the movie "Prince Caspian" from the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. C.S. Lewis was an Irish novelist and very close friend to Lord of the Rings writer J.R.R Tolkien. Lewis wrote "Prince Caspian" in late 1949 and it was first published in 1951. In "Prince Caspian," we find Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy returning to Narnia where they once ruled as kings and queens. Only this time, Narnia has
changed - 1,300 years have passed and Narnia is not the kingdom they once ruled.

Join us for this action packed adventure back into Narnia!

Looking for Volunteers!


Our Spring Scholastic Bookfair is coming up very soon and we are needing volunteers to help us out. There will be a number of things we will need to do from advertising to the actual running of the bookfair. If you are interested in helping out, join me in the library on Monday, March 30th at 3:20 for an information meeting. I will be looking for about 20 volunteers to help out during the week of the bookfair. See you on Monday!

MS Read-a-thon


The MS Read-a-thon reading month begins this week! Help cure Multiple Sclerosis simply by reading! Collect sponsors and read as many minutes as you can throughout the month of April. It's that easy! You will receive a sponsor list envelop from your teacher. Take it home and let your family and friends know that you want to help in finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Be sure to also record the number of minutes you read each day as there will be a CLASS PRIZE and a prize for the TOP THREE READERS IN THE SCHOOL! Listen to upcoming announcements for more information about Multiple Sclerosis and important dates during the Read-a-thon.

Things to Know about MS and the MS Society

1) Multiple Sclerosis means "many scars". These scars will block messages the brain sends to other parts of the body.

2) People older than 15 and younger than 40 can get Multiple Sclerosis.

3) About 55,000 to 75,000 Canadians have MS.

4) Researchers do not know, as of yet, what causes MS.

5) Symptoms of MS may include double or blurred vision; extreme fatigue; loss of balance; problems with coordination; stiffness of muscles; speech problems; short-term memory problems, and even partial or complete paralysis.

Airman by Eoin Colfer

The author of the "Artemis Fowl" series, brings us a new book - "Airman." This book begins with Declan Broekhart and his wife going to the World Fair in Paris in 1878. While taking a hot air balloon ride, his wife gives birth to their son Conor. In the 1890's Conor and his family live on a small island off of Ireland. Conor spends his days studying flight and exploring the king's castle with the king's daughter. However, Conor discovers a plot to overthrow the king and his life changes forever.

Pop In a Book



Join us in the library after school for a movie. Over the next few weeks, we will be watching books turned into movies. Movie time starts right at 3:15 and ends at 4:30. If you want to join us, see Ms. Friesen and sign up today. Space is limited! Our first movie will be "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", starring Brendan Fraser, on Wednesday, March 11th.


This movie is based on the Science Fiction/Fantasy classic book written by Jules Verne in 1864. The book and movie involve volcanic tubes, prehistoric creatures, natural hazards, giant mushrooms and geological time. Both movie and book are action packed and sure to keep the adventure seeker on the edge of their seat. Check out the video clip below for a sneak peak.

City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau

The City of Ember is an underground city that was built 200-years ago and it is the only place where there is light in a dark world. Lina and Doon have reached the age of 12 and begin working. Lina wants the sought after messenger job, but ends up drawing the dreaded pipeworks labourer. However, things may change when her friend Doon draws the messenger card and asks Lina to trade jobs! Doon thinks he fix the generator that keeps the lights on in the City of Ember. However, Lina and Doon's fate may change as Lina thinks she may have actually found a way out of the city!
